Manic Pixie Dream Girl
We all know the classic black dress and polished pearls that belong to none other than the iconic Holly Golightly. Yet while Breakfast at Tiffany’s, at the surface, may be a charming story about finding love, there inlies a deeper layer masked behind the lights of that New York City skyline. With all her independence and complications, Holly Golightly is the quintessential Manic Pixie Dream Girl, full of beauty, adventure, and quirks, she ultimately embraces the role of “fixing” the main character, Paul Varjak.
Set around the magic of Tiffany & Co. on Fifth Avenue in New York City, Holly Golightly meets Paul Varjak as he is moving into her apartment building and the two quickly begin to form a relationship. While Paul Varjak is seeing an older woman who is extremely wealthy in the beginning of the movie, his true passion resides his desire to be a writer. On the other side,Holly Golightly is working as an expensive call girl searching for a very rich, older man to marry. Through Holly’s spontaneous spirit and unique qualities, Varjak falls in love with the socialite and the two embrace in a kiss in the rain as the movie comes to an end.
While at first glance, the character of Holly Golightly seems to disrupt the stereotypical role of a female, it is quickly discovered that Golightly’s role within the film is solely to help Paul Varjak develop and fully grow within his own right. With her eccentric style and promiscuous behavior, Holly exists to help Paul Varjak achieve happiness without ever actually fulfilling her own goals.
